The Clinical Somatic Education Training is a 600-hr certification program for ES Movement Teachers where you’ll learn clinical hands-on protocols, methods, concepts, and principles developed by Thomas Hanna, as well as protocols and methods developed by Essential Somatics®.

Our training includes an enhanced approach to personal somatic exploration, mentorship, and coaching. These elements support our teachers in their ability to empower students to create a life of physical freedom, mastery, and joy.

The Essential Somatics® Clinical Somatic Education Training is the only professional training program teaching the clinical methods of Thomas Hanna, PhD that is certified by the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA). This program has met the Training Program Guidelines and Requirements set by the ISMETA Professional Standards Committee. 

Why Become a Clinical Somatic Educator?

This training will equip you with the clinical skills to work individually with people who are suffering from chronic muscle pain and physical discomfort or with those who simply want to maintain optimum movement for the rest of their lives. The training will enable you to address specific patterns of chronic stress and muscle pain and create individualized movement practices based on each individual session. It will also take you on a journey of discovery and change as you become a more embodied educator. 

After successfully completing this training, you will be recognized as a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator and you will become part of an exclusive worldwide community of practitioners.

Course Outline

Module 1

  • The five clinical methods used in Clinical Somatic Education
  • How to assess clients using posture and hands-on techniques
  • The hands-on protocol for the Green light (Landau) reflex
  • Extremity work for the neck, shoulder, and hips to enhance the Green Light reflex protocol
  • Discussions on somatic philosophy, Sensory Motor Amnesia, and teaching methods
  • Live clinical demonstration session by a trainer

Module 2

  • Recalibrate the green light protocol
  • The hands-on clinical protocol for the Red Light (Startle) reflex
  • Extremity work for the neck, shoulder, and hips to enhance the Red Light (Startle) reflex
  • Sequences for improving breathing
  • Live clinical demonstration session by a trainer

Module 3

  • Recalibrate all clinical protocols
  • The hands-on clinical protocol for the Trauma (Galant) reflex
  • Unique strategies for working with the shoulder girdle, walking gait, and full body integration
  • Discussions on neurophysiology, Thomas Hanna Audios and client case studies
  • Practice with real clients during a public clinic
  • Live clinical demonstration session by a trainer

Module 4

  • Recalibrate all clinical work so far
  • Unique sequences to calm the nervous system
  • Discussion and practice on scoliosis
  • Observed practical assessment covering hands-on skills, teaching, and communication skills during a public clinic
  • Live clinical demonstration session by a trainer

Module 5

  • Recalibrate all clinical work so far
  • Learn variations, additional options, nuances to enhance effectiveness of a session
  • Sequences for working with jaw pain
  • Sequences for working with frozen shoulder
  • Practice with real clients during a public clinic
  • Live clinical demonstration session by a trainer

Online & Home Study

In between in person modules there are scheduled discussions and mentoring sessions that take place online. Click to view the full schedule to see all dates.

All online discussions are mandatory, however sessions are recorded for students who cannot attend and instead you must complete and submit a short assignment.

In-Person Modules

There are 5 in person modules spread over 2.5 years. Modules are 6-months apart, except for Modules 3 and 4, which are 9-months apart.

Each day runs from 9:00 am – 6pm with a 90-minute lunch break, with the exception of the middle day, which finished at lunchime (afternoon free).

Pre-Application Checklist

Prerequisite Training

  • Successful completion of the Essential Somatics® Fundamentals
  • Successful completion of ES®MTT at least 2 months prior to the start of the CSET
  • Successful completion of an interview with one of the ES teaching team

Before you apply

  • Have you experienced at least 3 clinical sessions with an ES certified CSE?
  • Do you have a regular Somatic Movement practice?
  • Be attending classes regularly online or in person
  • Regularly teach Somatic Movement either online or in person

Tuition Information

Investment

Full tuition costs $11,000 USD and the program takes 2.5 years to complete.

Discounts

There is a 5% tuition discount for students who opt to pay their tuition in full up front. To be eligible for the 5% discount, you must pay in full within two weeks of being accepted onto the program.

Payment Due Dates

You can pay tuition at any time before the due dates. If you need a payment plan in order to attend, please let us know in your application and we will contact you directly.

  • Within two weeks of being accepted: $500 deposit
  • March 1, 2023: First payment of $2100
  • August 1, 2023: Second payment of $2100
  • March 1, 2024: Third payment of $2100
  • January 1, 2025: Fourth payment of $2100
  • August 1, 2025: Fifth payment of $2100

Late Payments

A fee may be charged for any late payments. Your tuition payments must be up to date in order to take part in this training.
