Essential Somatics® is quickly becoming well-known for its high-quality training in Clinical Somatic Education founded on the work of Thomas Hanna. We conduct clinical and movement trainings in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and India.

Karyn Clark, BSc, CCSE, MMCA

Certified Clinical Somatic Educator

Courses taught:
Certified Essential Somatics® teacher of the Fundamentals Immersion Course. Assists in the Essential Somatic Movement Teacher Training program. Co-teaches the neurophysiology components of the CSE training.

Karyn Clark, BSc, CCSE, MMCA graduated as a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator in 2016. She holds a BSc in Chiropractic having previously graduated from the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in 2004. Karyn is a qualified personal trainer and holds a range coaching qualification in outdoor adventurous sports. Karyn is a certified teacher with Essential Somatics® teaching the Fundamentals Immersion Course as well as assisting with the ESMTT program.  Karyn has a strong interest and background  in Neuroscience and Pain Science,  and teaches the neurophysiology components of the CSE training.

Karyn works with a wide range of clients who experience chronic pain, sports injuries, pregnancy and postnatal problems, and  restriction in mobility and movement at Evolve Life, her practice in Hertfordshire, UK; she also offers regular classes and workshops. Building on her background as a PT and Adventurous Sports, Karyn and her business partner run unique retreats that combine Somatics, playful movement, and exploration with outdoor fitness and adventurous sports such as climbing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Through this unique combination their clients are able to experience personal development on many levels allowing them to move towards becoming the best version of themselves.  Karyn believes wholeheartedly that Essential Somatics is the foundation of life and is the basis in which we are able to build upon to do all the things we want to do and reach our full potential, thus allowing us to Evolve Life. 

When not working Karyn loves to spend time with her daughters and border collie.  She finds freedom in being outside on the water wakeboarding, kayaking , or stand-up paddle boarding and regularly goes climbing and hiking. Karyn  can regularly be found weight training, having more recently found a love for natural body building and uses Essential Somatics to help improve her training.


 

Theresa Evans, CCSE

Certified Clinical Somatic Educator

Courses taught:
Senior clinical trainer in the US, Canada and Australia clinical training programs. Teaches the Move Without Pain Fundamentals Immersion Course.  She is also a Certified Essential Somatics® trainer of ESMTT Levels One and Two.

Theresa Evans, CCSE, is a graduate of Somatic Systems Institute in Northampton, MA, and Essential Somatics®. She also holds a BSN in Nursing. In 2009, Theresa completed her 500-hour Yoga Certification in the tradition of the Himalayan Institute at Yoga North in Duluth, MN. Theresa is a senior teacher on the Essential Somatics clinical teaching team as well as a mentor for those who are currently training to become Certified Somatic Educators. She is a certified teacher of the Essential Somatics Movement Teacher Training program. 

Theresa is excited to collaborate with Martha Peterson in presenting the Essential Somatics® Fundamentals Immersion Course across the US and internationally. Theresa teaches group classes, and conducts workshops and retreats. She works with individual clients who are experiencing chronic muscle and joint pain, mobility issues, post-operative gait issues, those who want to improve their breathing, and "weekend warriors" who want to balance their extreme activities with a gentler practice.

When she is not working Theresa enjoys making music with her husband Pete, hiking and long walks with her daughter Stephanie, stand-up paddle boarding, making art of all kinds, and climbing the occasional tree.

Laura M Gates is a Certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE), Certified Clinical Somatic Educator (CCSE) and practitioner based in New York City. She trained in Somatic Education at Somatic Systems Institute, Northampton, MA and was also certified by Novato Institute of Somatic Research and Training, Novato, CA in 2007. Laura assists and collaborates with Martha Peterson, CHSE, director of Essential Somatics®, teaching and training somatic movement coaches and practitioners internationally. She enjoys developing somatic curriculum to address various muscle pain conditions with a focus on scoliosis and dancers’ needs. She brings over 40 years of movement education to her work. Laura is also an ongoing student of kinesthetic anatomy with celebrated master teacher Irene Dowd. 

Regarding her own issues around scoliosis and chronic pain Laura says, “Thomas Hanna’s techniques and system has proven hugely and uniquely helpful to my scoliosis, increasing comfort and mobility, improving alignment, and giving me a ‘somatic medicine kit’ that I use daily. I can’t imagine life without Somatics.”


 

Elizabeth Wakley is a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator and Essential Somatic Movement Teacher. She is owner of somatic movement for life in Calgary. Elizabeth is a certified teacher with Essential Somatics® teaching the Fundamentals Immersion Course.

 Elizabeth’s passion is to guide people to reduce their pain, free their movement and find a sense of freedom in their lives. She has developed expertise in working with people who are “at the end of the road” in terms of options they have to improve their health and also working with people who have experienced trauma. She truly believes that everyone can find improvement.
