Essential Somatics® is quickly becoming well-known for it's high-quality training in Clinical Somatic Education founded on the work of Thomas Hanna. We conduct clinical and movement trainings in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and India.

Carrie Day, CCSE, MA, RSME

Certified Clinical Somatic Educator

Courses taught:
Co-leads the New Jersey clinical training program. Teaches workshops in Asheville, NC, and is the first to offer live, online Somatic Movement classes.



Carrie Day, CCSE, MA, RSME, teaches and holds private practices in Asheville, NC, Greenville, SC, and Maplewood, NJ. Carrie discovered Hanna Somatics during her search for a renewed freedom of movement. She trained at Somatics Systems Institute and became a Certified Clinical Somatics Educator in 2008. Carrie recently completed a Master of Arts in Dance and Somatic Well-Being from the University of Central Lancashire.

Carrie lives in the mountains of the Western Carolinas with her daughter and her cat. She sees private clients in her office in Biltmore Village in Asheville, NC, and teaches classes and workshops in Asheville, Greenville, SC, and online. She also assists with Essential Somatics® professional trainings with Martha Peterson in Maplewood, NJ.

Carrie loves being able to offer this work in several different regions and on many different levels. Her philosophy is that every soma has the ability to self-regulate and self-correct. She hopes to empower her students and clients to see themselves as self-healing beings.


Theresa Evans, CCSE

Certified Clinical Somatic Educator

Courses taught:
Senior clinical trainer in the US, Canada and Australia clinical training programs. Teaches the Move Without Pain Fundamentals Immersion Course.  She is also a Certified Essential Somatics® trainer of ESMTT Levels One and Two.



Theresa Evans, CCSE, is a graduate of Somatic Systems Institute in Northampton, MA, and Essential Somatics®. She also holds a BSN in Nursing. In 2009, Theresa completed her 500-hour Yoga Certification in the tradition of the Himalayan Institute at Yoga North in Duluth, MN. Theresa is a senior teacher on the Essential Somatics clinical teaching team as well as a mentor for those who are currently training to become Certified Somatic Educators. She is a certified teacher of the Essential Somatics Movement Teacher Training program. 

Theresa is excited to collaborate with Martha Peterson in presenting the Essential Somatics® Fundamentals Immersion Course across the US and internationally. Theresa teaches group classes, conducts workshops and retreats. She works with individual clients who are experiencing chronic muscle and joint pain, mobility issues, post-operative gait issues, those who want to breathe better, and "weekend warriors" who want to balance their extreme activities with a gentler practice.

When she is not working, Theresa enjoys making music with her husband Pete, hiking and long walks with her daughter Stephanie, stand-up paddle boarding, making art of all kinds, and climbing the occasional tree.


Laura Gates, CHSE, CCSE

Certified Hanna Somatic Educator

Courses taught:
Co-leads the New Jersey, Calgary, and United Kingdom clinical trainings. Teaches Somatics workshops in the US and UK. 


Laura M Gates is a Certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE), Certified Clinical Somatic Educator (CCSE) and practitioner based in New York City. She trained in Somatic Education at Somatic Systems Institute, Northampton, MA and was also certified by Novato Institute of Somatic Research and Training, Novato, CA in 2007. Laura assists and collaborates with Martha Peterson, CHSE, director of Essential Somatics®, teaching and training somatic movement coaches and practitioners internationally. She enjoys developing somatic curriculum to address various muscle pain conditions with a focus on scoliosis and dancers’ needs. She brings over 40 years of movement education to her work. Laura is also an ongoing student of kinesthetic anatomy with celebrated master teacher Irene Dowd. 

Regarding her own issues around scoliosis and chronic pain Laura says, “Thomas Hanna’s techniques and system has proven hugely and uniquely helpful to my scoliosis, increasing comfort and mobility, improving alignment, and giving me a ‘somatic medicine kit’ that I use daily. I can’t imagine life without Somatics.”
