In 2014, Cheryl Lee was in constant, agonizing and debilitating pain. Her knowledge of Pilates, exercise and especially yoga were of help, but not enough. A well-known and respected chronic pain specialist and author told her that her nervous system was permanently damaged, nothing further could be done to help her, and that she should start using a wheelchair. Then Cheryl stumbled upon Somatics.
After five minutes of a Somatic Movement she discovered on YouTube, she experienced almost instant relief from the worst of the biting pain in her back. Now, she wanted to learn more so that she could continue to help herself. After a clinical somatic session with Martha Peterson, CCSE, she was amazed to have an entire week living pain-free. In her words:
“I felt I had found the missing link to long-term pain relief that years of yoga, Pilates, physio, chiropractic, massage, osteopathy and pain management hadn’t offered. With daily Somatic Movements that yield repeatable, consistent comfort, I found a way to regain control of movement and begin to lead a normal life again. In fact, it completely changed my life.”
Cheryl immediately signed up to the Hanna Somatic Exercise Coach Training and the 3-year Clinical Somatic Education Training.
Cheryl Lee is now a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator in the UK Midlands in Loughborough, Leicestershire. She offers short courses and workshops, and one-to-one sessions.
She has an ongoing interest in pain, the brain, and neuroscience, and has subsequently undergone teacher training in Mindfulness and taken courses with the pain researchers, Noi Group, and leading back pain expert, Professor Peter O’Sullivan. This work complements what we do as Clinical Somatic Educators: encourage self-awareness so that options for change become available, return locus of control to the individual, increase their self-efficacy and enable enjoyment and freedom in movement.
